Paper. various dimensions, leaves [431], loose leaves
Notes
Contains: Bazzani papers (15511601); letters of other writers to governors (15801688); letters of Francesco Sabellico, Duke of Sora's auditor, to the governor Giovanni Benedetto Venturelli (1608); letters of various writers to Luigi De Rosis (16381640). N.B: the folder also contains a file containing 12 seals that have fallen off letters and which were not re-attached during the restoration.
Miscellaneous material in which as well as various correspondence of an administrative nature there are several documents of the Contrari period, as well as private letters sent to the governors. The Bazzani papers include letters of the administrators of the Contrari house to their stewards, particularly important for news regarding crops, agricultural production and trade; of considerable interest are the letters referring to the transition period of the rule of Contrari and Boncompagni (15751578) and those regarding the Pepoli lawsuit concerning the alodial property claimed by Laura Contrari, sister of Ercole, may be substantially recognized as belonging to three goups: letters of Silvestro Ognibene and Gabrielo Penavara to Captain Giovanni Ludovico Bazzani the Contrari counts' land agent (15511555), letters of Gabrielo Penavara to Giovanni Bazzani, Count Ercole Contrari's land agent (15671570), letters of various writers to Giovanni and Ercole Bazzani (dean of Vignola), among which there are numerous letters of the Marquis Giacomo Boncompagni (1571 1601).
As a whole perhaps they can be identified with the "black canvas bag with various instruments and letters of the late Colonel Giovanni Bazzani" mentioned in the inventory of July 31 1609 (folder). The letters of various writers to the governors some by members of the Rangoni family, feudal vassals bordering the marquisate mainly deal with questions of an administrative or juridical nature; the bundle also includes some letters and drafts of the governors themselves. The Sabellico-Venturelli correspondence regard mostly the administration of justice in the marquisate, the request for and transmission of pardons, petitions and warrants (in the letters dating back to the beginning of 1608 there is interesting news of the marriage of Gregorio Boncompagni to Eleonora Zapata). Concerning the letters of Luigi De Rosis, governor of the marquisate of Vignola between 1641 and 1642, they are personal letters, some in Spanish, and do not regard the administration of the fief and date from a period previous to his arrival at Vignola.
