1 - Este Government period between 1320 and 1795
Vignola passed under the rule of the Este family in 1288 when the population of Modena also
placed itself under the protection of the House of Este. In 1401, Marquis Nicoḷ III dEste
granted Vignola in fee to the Contrari family which died out in 1575; the fief thus returned
to the House, now Duchy of Este, until 1577, when it was granted to the Boncompagni family
until 1796. Campiglio, with the villas of Denzano, Villa Bianca and Rosola, belonged to the
Rangoni Fief, Lords of Spilamberto. During the Napoleonic Government, it passed under Vignola.
The 1st section comprises documents from the Community and others from the Boncompagni - Ludovisi
Marquisate Archive and from the Campiglio Podesta Archive.
